Today the demands on modern surface treatment are complex, so providing optimally designed solutions calls for knowledge of the specific applications, media, and influencing factors, in all areas of industry and all types of processing. The latest highlight is iClad®, a processing head for laser cladding of internal surfaces designed for industrial use for apertures as small as 26 mm in diameter.
Industry has long been on the lookout for solutions for the repair and coating of difficult-to-access components, for example in the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, or in medical engineering. The answer to this demand arose from the proximity of Pallas to the RWTH Aachen University, where Stephan Kalawrytinos, manager of Pallas, availed himself of the laser sources and expert advice of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT), which is located at the university, which led to the acquisition of a license to sell a processing head for the laser cladding of internal surfaces.
The compact design of the iClad special processing head makes it possible for the first time to coat bores measuring from 26 mm in diameter and to a depth of 500 mm. Even blind bores can now be coated, alloyed, or annealed right into the angle. By way of comparison: conventional standard processing heads require an aperture diameter of the inner contour of at least 100 mm.
Pallas manufactures this highly efficient processing head for a range of laser sources. This means that iClad can be connected to diode lasers, Nd:YAG lasers, fiber lasers, or disc lasers. The laser power can range up to 3 kW. The modular design allows different heads to be attached for varying diameters of the workpiece to be treated. The head is optionally supplied with a fixed or with a rotating processing head. In this way, internal contours from a diameter of 26 mm can be treated to a depth of 500 mm. The distance from the head to the working area is between 5 and 8 mm. Despite the compact design, an optional camera connection for adjustment or for process monitoring is also possible.
